Polishing Compound Colours: Which Bar with Which Wheel

Ask three polishers which compound colour means what and you will get three answers. Colour is a useful way to keep bars and wheels apart on the bench, but it is not a universal grade standard. What actually matters is the sequence: a cutting stage to remove the scratch pattern, then a colouring stage to raise brightness — and one dedicated wheel for each.

Work backwards from the surface you have now

If the part still carries grinding marks, you need a cutting action first. If the surface is already even and only lacks brightness, starting with an aggressive bar simply adds work. Single bars versus the set

A shop that has settled on a process usually buys one colour in volume. Pair each bar with the right wheel

Loading, speed and heat

Touch the bar to the running wheel for a second or two at a time — little and often beats a heavy application. A face loaded with compound throws residue and heats the part; a dry wheel glazes and burns the cloth. Keep the wheel moving so heat does not build in one spot, and follow the speed rating of both the machine and the wheel.

Trial it before you standardise

Compound behaviour depends on the alloy, the starting surface and the machine speed, so treat any colour coding as a starting point. Run one part through the two stages, inspect under consistent lighting, and only then fix the combination for production.
