Cotton Buffing Wheel Sizes and Ply Counts: How to Read the Stamp

Most cotton buffing wheels carry a simple stamp — a number, a multiplication sign, another number. That mark tells you the diameter and how many layers of cloth the wheel is built from, and those two numbers explain almost everything about how the wheel will behave. This guide shows how to read it and how to turn it into a purchase order.

The stamp is diameter in inches × ply count

A mark of 4×50 means four inches of diameter and fifty layers of cloth. One inch is about 25mm, so 4 inches is a Ø100mm wheel. The second number is not a thickness and not a grit — it is simply how many layers of cloth were stacked before the wheel was sewn or pressed.

A 4″×50Ply stamp translates to a Ø100mm wheel about 12mm thick.

6″ × 50 ply Ø150mm 12mm WANHU-CB-26
7″ × 30 ply Ø175mm 7mm WANHU-CB-18
8″ × 60 ply Ø200mm 14mm WANHU-CB-22
10″ × 50 ply Ø250mm 12mm WANHU-CB-30

Ply count becomes thickness — and feel

As a working rule across the WanHu range: about 25 ply gives roughly 6mm, about 30 ply gives roughly 7mm, about 50 ply gives roughly 12mm and about 60 ply gives roughly 14mm. Thickness is really a proxy for stiffness. A thin 25-ply wheel such as Orange Cotton Buffing Wheel 6″x25Ply Ø150mm×6mm with Black Fibre Centre wraps around an edge; a 60-ply wheel such as Yellow Cotton Buffing Wheel 8″x60Ply Ø200mm×14mm with Leather Centre holds a flat face and cuts harder. If your wheel is folding away from the part, go up in ply; if it will not follow the shape, go down.

Diameter follows the machine, not the part

Small wheels suit bench grinders and detail work — Yellow Cotton Buffing Wheel 3″x50Ply Ø75mm×12mm with Leather Centre at Ø75mm and White Cotton Buffing Wheel 3″x50Ply Ø75mm×12mm with Leather Centre in white are the entry point. Mid sizes cover most fabrication work: White Cotton Buffing Wheel 6″x50Ply Ø150mm×12mm with Leather Centre at Ø150mm and White Cotton Buffing Wheel 7″x50Ply Ø175mm×12mm with Leather Centre at Ø175mm. Large diameters such as the Ø250mm Yellow Cotton Buffing Wheel 10″x50Ply Ø250mm×12mm with Leather Centre suit panels and repeat production. Remember that diameter changes surface speed at a given rpm, so confirm the machine rating whenever you change size.

Construction and centre are the other two decisions

A spiral-sewn wheel like Yellow Cotton Buffing Wheel 6″x50Ply Ø150mm×12mm Spiral-Sewn is firm and cuts; a plain wheel is softer and better for final colouring; a loose wavy wheel such as White Loose Cotton Buffing Wheel 6″x50Ply Ø150mm×12mm Wavy Edge follows awkward shapes. Beyond cotton, Indigo Denim Buffing Wheel Spiral-Sewn uses denim for more bite and Black Hard Canvas Buffing Wheel uses hard canvas for heavier work. Then match the centre to your arbor: leather, black fibre and brown fibre centres all appear in the range, and Steel Tapered Cone Mandrel for Buffing Wheels adapts a wheel to a drill when there is no tapered spindle.

If the wheel has no stamp

A few items — including some of our unstamped cotton, denim and canvas wheels — simply do not carry a mark. In that case measure the diameter and the thickness directly, check the centre bore, and send us those three numbers. We will match them to the nearest item in the range.

Not sure which item fits your line? Send the workpiece material, the starting surface, the target finish, machine type and speed, plus the quantities you need — request a quote and we will come back with a matched combination and lead time.

Always follow the machine manual and the safety information supplied with the product, and wear appropriate eye, hand, hearing and respiratory protection.
