How to Choose a Cotton Buffing Wheel for Metal Polishing

A cotton buffing wheel looks like a simple object: layers of cloth stitched or folded around a centre. In practice the diameter, the ply count, the construction and the centre each change how the wheel behaves on the part. Choosing all four together is what turns a polishing step from guesswork into a repeatable process. Start with the diameter your machine can run

Diameter sets the surface speed at a given rpm and the size of the contact area. Let the ply count set thickness and feel

Ply count is simply how many layers of cloth are stacked, and it drives both thickness and stiffness. Choose the construction for the stage

A plain wheel — soft, with loose cloth folds — carries compound gently and is the usual choice for final colouring. Get the centre and the mounting right

The centre has to match the arbor you own. Leather centres are the standard fit for tapered spindles; black fibre and brown fibre centres appear across the range for other mountings.
